Hungary had already qualified before the match.
Portugal needed at least a point from the game, but it was Hungary who took the lead in the 19th minute; a stunning half-volley from Zoltan Gera.
Portugal pulled themselves back into the game, and back in the tournament, three minutes before half-time; Nani running on to Ronaldo's weighted pass and slashing home with his left foot.
Half-time: Hungary 1 - Portugal 1
Right after the break, Hungary were back in front; captain Balazs Dzsudzsak's free-kick deflected into the net.
Then Ronaldo drew Portugal level again, just three minutes later, with a slick back-heel flick.
Frustration for the Portuguese captain soon followed, after Balazs Dzsudzsak fired another free-kick into the wall. The Portugal team seemed to stand and watch as Dzsudzsak picked up the rebound and sent a screamer in for Hungary's third.
Once again the Hungarian team went over to their fans to celebrate the goal together.
Cristiano Ronaldo's header leveled the scores at three goals a piece; to make this one of the most entertaining games of the tournament so far.
And then Hungary came so close to a fourth goal; the shot from Akos Elek hitting the near post.
Who England would play in the next round changed by the minute; as Austria equalised in the other game, to peg back Iceland.
Hungary topped the group, England were due to play Portugal as runners-up; then Iceland scored in the last seconds against Austria, who needed to win.
It won't be an easy game against Iceland; who tend to lose the keys to the bus.
Group F in Lyon.
