Czech Republic only lost narrowly against Spain, in their opening game, but no points on the board is no points on the board.
Croatia have three points, after a hard-fought victory against Turkey, so could be happy with a draw.
It took a while coming but not against the run of play.
After showing so much promise, Ivan Perisic finally drove through the backtracking Czech defence then, without breaking stride, unleashed the ball across Petr Cech and into the back of the net. Cech might have been a little unsighted, but that just means he had the same angle covered as his defender. Once the defender was beat, so was he.
Half-time: Czech Republic 0 - Croatia 1
Croatia created ten shots in the first-half, while Czech Republic didn't create a single effort.
Czech Republic tried to give an account of themselves at the start of the second half - they needed to - but were caught on the wrong foot just before the hour.
A sloppy pass from Roman Hubnik was picked up by Marcelo Brozovic who quickly released Ivan Rakitic.
The Barcelona man charged down on a stuttering Petr Cech and dinked the ball over the Arsenal keeper. The only angle he didn't have covered was the one above his head.
While the Czech Republic obituary was being written, Tomas Rosicky knocked on the coffin lid; floating the ball perfectly for substitute Milan Skoda to head past Danijel Subasic.
With fourteen minutes still to play - and so many late, late goals scored in this tournament - the Czechs had just received a kiss of life.
Play had to be momentarily stopped as flares were once again thrown by supporters. This time from the Croatian fans.
Another inspired substitution and another injury time goal as Tomas Necid fired a penalty into the roof of the net, after Domagoj Vida raised his hand to the ball in the penalty area.
The flare-throwing incident from the Croatian fans may well have cost their team the game.
Czech Republic even came close to sealing victory with a final couple of corners.
Group D in St-Etienne.
